Reading every day is one of the most important ways for you to help your child be successful at school. To assist at home with your child's reading development, we have signed on to the online reading program Tumblebooks (click on title for link). This is a tool that will give your child material appropriate for their reading level.
Of course, reading with books is a wonderful experience as well. Try to read with your child as often as possible. Ask your child to frequently read out loud in order to work on their reading fluency. Ask them questions about what they have read to increase their comprehension. Getting them to read “between the lines” by asking inference questions such as “Why do you think the character did that?” or “Why is the character smiling when it is a sad moment in the story?” is especially useful for them. Having a chat about the story is an excellent way to model good reading skills. Reading recipes, instructions, information websites, maps, and other forms of text around the home will also strengthen your child's decoding and comprehension skills |
We will be exploring the inquiry model of writing in Grade Two. It involves having students generate higher level thinking questions and designing methods to help answer those questions. The inquiry method is a natural extension of a child's curiosity so feel free to keep feeding their curiosities at home!
Beside class learning and weekly homework assignments, I encourage students to write as much for enjoyment as possible during their Grade Two year. Writing can be in the form of online blogs, journals or diaries. Students can also email or snail-mail friends and relatives in order to build up their important letter writing skills. Creating their own stories either on paper or computer is a great way to push their narrative writing skills. They can help record shopping lists, directions or reminder notes around the house. Sending and receiving texts or supervised web messaging are also fun ways to experience writing. I will introduce the class to cursive writing this year. Cursive writing is an artistic way of creating the written word, and if practiced, can increase overall writing speed. |
